February 21, 2021 marks the one year anniversary of the discovery of Philip Haney’s body in California. During the past twelve months, law enforcement has released very few details about Mr. Haney’s death. The lack of information from law enforcement is simply unacceptable.

Philip Haney, a Department of Homeland Security whistleblower and author of the book See Something Say Nothing: A Homeland Security Officer Exposes the Government’s Submission to Jihad, was found dead in Amador County, California, on the morning of Friday, February 21, 2020.  His body was found in a park and ride open area adjacent to Highway 16 near State Highway 124.

The Amador County Sheriff’s office reported on Saturday February 22 that Mr. Haney “appeared to have suffered a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound” according to a story in the Sacramento Bee.

But on Monday February 24, the Sheriff’s Office walked back this previous communication, stating in a media release: “We are currently in the beginning phase of our investigation and any final determination as to the cause and manner of Mr. Haney’s death would be extremely premature and inappropriate.  No determination will be made until all evidence is examined and analyzed.”

This media release also indicated that the Sheriff’s Office was in possession of Mr. Haney’s vehicle, the firearm located at the scene, as well as Mr. Haney’s RV, and that the Sheriff’s Office would request evidence processing assistance from the FBI on these items.

On July 22, five months after Mr. Haney’s death, the Sheriff’s Office provided an update in the form of another media release, which noted that a forensic autopsy on Mr. Haney had been performed.  It also mentions that a number of items and pieces of evidence were turned over to the FBI and that the FBI “has performed a forensic examination on these items.”

Since July 22 there has been no official update.  It has now been over eight months since Mr. Haney was found dead.

While it is important for the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and “get it right”, eight months is an awfully long time to investigate without providing the American public with any information.

What is known is that Mr. Haney devoted his career at DHS to protecting America, and his expert knowledge of the threat facing the United States caused significant unease in the Obama-Biden White House.  Mr. Haney was a vocal critic of the Obama-Biden administration’s willful blindness approach toward terrorism.

Without explanation, years of Mr. Haney’s work to “connect the dots” on known and suspected terrorists was ordered deleted by DHS.  In Mr. Haney’s book he describes the process of deleting these records that were so valuable to law enforcement and that had taken so much time and effort to compile.  In his book he calls out Obama, Hillary Clinton and Janet Napolitano, among others, for seemingly working against the best interests of the American people.

The long duration of the investigation into Mr. Haney’s death is looking more and more like the investigation into the death of Vincent Foster.  Foster, a Clinton insider, died July 20, 1993 under suspicious circumstances (suicide?), and the Fiske report into his death took almost a year to complete.  The investigation into Mr. Foster’s death then continued for years.

Is the investigation into Mr. Haney’s death being slow-walked?  If so, who would benefit?

Suicide – or something sinister

If one reads Mr. Haney’s book and watches the interviews he gave, it becomes apparent that Mr. Haney was a dedicated professional on a mission to protect his country, and that he enjoyed the challenges of this vital mission.  He had a purpose in life.  Further, he was a religious man (his Catholic faith considers suicide a sin), and was set to be married.  None of this behavior would indicate that he was suicidal.

DogHillMedia.com files Freedom of Information Act Request

On September 9, 2020, DogHillMedia.com filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Request with the FBI, requesting information on the firearm(s) and ammunition found at the scene.  We think that the American public has the right to know the basic information about these items.  The American public has the right to know if Mr. Haney owned the weapon(s) found at the scene.

On September 28, 2020, DogHillMedia.com received, as expected, formal notice from the US Department of Justice denying our FOIA request.  The notice stated that the material requested was exempt from disclosure pursuant to 5 U.S.C. Sec. 522(b)(7)(a).

We think this exemption is not sufficient to deny our request, as the law contemplates redaction of documents and records.  On October 11, 2020, DogHillMedia.com filed an appeal. We will provide updates on this website.

2/1/2021 UPDATE: On January 31, 2021 DogHillMedia.com filed an additional FOIA request with DOJ for records concerning Mr. Haney’s ownership of firearms at the time of his death. We anticipate a response from DOJ this month. We wish to thank our readers for supporting our pursuit of the truth.

4/25/2021 UPDATE: In a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice dated March 2, 2021, DogHillMedia.com was notified that the material we requested in our January 31, 2021 FOIA request was exempt from disclosure. DogHillMedia.com appealed this decision via certified mail.

The U.S. Department of Justice acknowledged receipt of our appeal in a letter dated March 24, 2021. The letter states in part, “In an attempt to afford each appellant equal and impartial treatment, OIP [Office of Information Policy] has adopted a general practice of assigning appeals in the approximate order of receipt.” It further states, “We will notify you of the decision on your appeal as soon as we can.”

5/21/21 Update: Today our legal team spoke with the Department of Justice. The DOJ’s response to our FOIA appeal (see previous updates below) is expected within the next few weeks. We will continue to update this page. Thank you for your support as we pursue the truth. We hope our readers have a wonderful Memorial Day, and to all of our Veterans a very special thank you! -Rex

6/21/21 Update: Our legal team has been notified by DOJ that the FBI properly withheld all records we requested (records concerning any firearms and ammunition found at the scene). At this point our options are mediation, or litigation in federal district court.

8/19/21 Update: Today doghillmedia.com filed a request with the Amador County (California) Office of Sheriff-Coroner for release of information under the California Public Records Act.

8/29/2021 Update: Doghillmedia.com’s legal team received the letter below from the Amador County (California) Office of Sheriff-Coroner denying our request for the police report from February 21, 2020, the date Philip Haney was found dead in Amador County. We think a redacted form of the police report should have been provided. Our work continues.

9/6/21 Update: A reader shared the following link to an August 27, 2021 article in the Ledger Dispatch, an excellent paper doing excellent work in Amador County, CA:

  1. Glad to see there are still ongoing efforts to get to the bottom of what if anything has taken place with regards to Phil’s death… Thank you for posting all the updates. Much appreciated.

  2. As a citizen of Amador County, I remember clearly driving to work the morning that Phil Haney’s body was found, driving right past the scene. Ya wanna know what else I found incredibly disturbing…. the private event at the same RV VILLAGE that Phil was living in, for none other than guess who…

That’s right folks. JOE BIDEN. it was rumored to be some kind of RV expo, but when it came down to that time there were 2 HUGE RVs that were across the street with generators running day and night. Now I tell you I personally rang up ” Dr. ” Jill Biden and his Sister.
Not only that but I didn’t see a single other RV come through our little mountain town, but there were probably 15 FBI & fed exmp vehicles back and forth all weekend.

I think the fix has been in for this election for quite some time. And it’s no surprise that Phil was “suicided” and you can put that under the #Clintonbodycount because Clinton and Biden are 1 in the same.

It’s disgusting and evil. He was a good man and a Godly man.

I wish the Lord would lift the veil.

  3. I have been in contact with a local newspaper’s editor regarding Phillip Haneys death. I asked what he thought of me requesting a FOIA on all the hours worked by the FBI on this case. He basically said go for it! I have zero experience with foias other than reading them, but if Doghill Media put a request in, it might speed things up a bit. Honestly, my faith in an honest and forthright FBI ended five years ago yesterday when Comey held a news conference. While we are on this earth, these matters matter, but ultimately the battle is one of good versus evil, and right now in 2021 evil is having a field day.

  4. Rex.
16 months sine Philip Haney was gunned down. Has anyone reached out to Congressman Louis Gohmert from Texas? He claimed Haney was murdered right after the incident and no word from him since. He is on the subcommittee for Terrorism, Homeland Security etc. Surely, in a city like DC, know for its ‘LEAKERS’, there has to be information, rumored or not, that would advance this cover up. The FBI has had ample time to scrub Haney’s laptop, desktop, thumb drive, RV, pistol, clothing etc. Even the county mounties haven’t had a leak. Has anyone checked the bank accounts of the Sheriff and his deputies?

  5. For those interested you can go to the Amador Sheriff Facebook page. Amador County Sheriff’s Office investigators have requested assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to analyze evidence gathered from Philip Haney’s RV. The Amador County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) has been the lead investigative agency in Haney’s death. They called in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to analyze documents, phone records, laptops, and numerous items. For its part, the ACSO has stated that no answers or updates would be given or released until all the materials have been processed, examined, and analyzed. The investigation is completed in its entirety. Then, and only then, will information regarding Haney’s death be released? One year later, friends and family grieve the loss of their friend, Phillip Haney however, it appears the FBI is dragging their feet on this!

  6. I remember distinctly the day that Phillip Haney testified before the Senate on June 28, 2016. As I listened to him I realized that he would not be long for this world . . . he knew way too much about the Obama/Biden administration. As the 2020 election grew nearer and it appeared that Biden might be the Democrat nominee, I thought Haney better protect himself . . . two weeks later he was dead. This was no suicide any more than Seth Rich was a suicide.

  7. I’m glad to see that some people still care. I think the silence says a lot. They could say there is inconclusive evidence or that the case is still under investigation (somehow), but it seems like they haven’t. Just wait it out and people will forget. So far, so good for them, I guess. Stinks.

  8. Where is the Justice in Philip Haney ‘s murder. Who is being covered up?

  9. Thank you for continuing to press for answers. Don’t let them bury this.

  10. Still praying for justice. Glad you are still trying to get answers. Hoping we would find out before the anniversary of his death.

  11. It’s been a year since Philip Haney was gunned down in a California parking lot.
The Amador Sheriff’s dept, the FBI et others are stonewalling the press.
    Who killed him?
Where are his laptop and desk top computers?
Where is the thumb drive he wore around his neck?
    Where is his weapon?
    His 2nd book material?

  12. The FBI could put out a finding of suicide or not, just based on powder residue on his hand. Unfortunately, I think there may be some political reasons that preclude a (now impossible) timely release of information. If nothing else, people should be questioning if they are just “milking” the case-its a lot of time and money we are paying for and not getting much.

  13. Thank you for your comment. The complete lack of information from the authorities is concerning. We are doing all we can to get information for our readers and have filed an additional records request, see update above.

  14. This investigation is like trying to find a needle that was never in the haystack. People would really like to know if there are any updates on who killed Phil, as we approach the one year anniversary of his death.
